FDA clearance on the new FreeStyle libra 2 iOS app is big news for diabetic users who use Abbott’s Freestyle libre non-invasive glucose monitoring systems.
The app is approved for use for adults and children ( 4 and older) with diabetes. One of the key benefits of the new iOS app is that it provides the ability for caregivers to remotely monitor their loved one’s glucose readings and get real-time alarms.

This is timely as Apple released a new feature to seamlessly share health data with family and care providers with iOS 15.
The FreeStyle Libre 2 features optional real-time glucose alarms that automatically notify users when glucose levels are high or low. Readings are collected every minute and users can look at the eight-hour glucose history on the system.
According to the company’s announcement today, the new FreeStyle Libre 2 iOS app will be available soon in the US to download on the Apple app store.
FreeStyle Libre 2 iOS app is the only sensor-based glucose monitoring app that allows users to check their glucose with a compatible iPhone every minute with the optional real-time glucose alarms.
According to the company, the High Glucose alarm level can be set between 120-400 mg/dL and the Low Glucose alarm level can be set between 60 – 100 mg/dL .
Notifications will only be received when alarms are turned on and the sensor is within 20 feet of the reading device. Critical Alerts must be enabled to receive alarms and alerts on the smartphone
